daVinci Robotic Surgery

Surgery remains the only curative treatment for rectal cancer. Because of its location deep in the pelvis, the rectum poses many surgical challenges.

Robotic surgery is the most recent advancement in laparoscopic surgery for rectal cancer. The daVinci robot allows our surgeons to operate at a 3-D console away from the surgical field. The procedure allows excellent 3-D views, improving the ability of the surgeon to remove the cancer and may help in preserving the nerves that control bladder and sexual function.

Becoming accredited in daVinci robot surgery for rectal cancer requires extensive training and a rigorous process of evaluation. Nationally, only about 3 percent of rectal cancer surgeries are performed with the daVinci. Our group performed the first robotically assisted resection of the rectum for cancer in the state of Indiana. We are also qualified to train other surgeons to use the daVinci robot. Surgery for rectal prolapse can also be done with the daVinci.
