| Program Summary
The Indiana University School of Medicine Colon and Rectal Residency Program was established in 2008 through a partnership between Indiana University, St. Francis Hospitals, and Kendrick Regional Center. The teaching staff comprises of both surgeons from Kendrick Regional Center and IU Assistant Clinical Professors of Surgery. They include Drs. Bridget Sanders (Program Director), Virgilio George, Olaf Johansen, Fred Lane, Dipen Maun, R. Barry Melbert, Bruce Robb, and Ben Tsai. Residents participate in all aspects of patient care and surgical cases under the direction of their assigned attending surgeon for the rotation.

The resident will adhere to the IU,
Indianapolis Campus, or Mooresville rotation office, colonoscopy, and outpatient/ inpatient operative schedule as outlined. Each rotation will incorporate both diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy, outpatient/inpatient colon and rectal surgery, office based procedures, and office based consults and postoperative follow up as well as inpatient consults. The major goal of the
Indianapolis campus rotation is to allow residents to be involved in the care of complex colon and rectal surgical patients and to assist in clinical decision-making responsibilities with the surgical teaching staff. The major goal of the Mooresville rotation is to allow residents to be involved with a more rural population of colon and rectal surgical patients and assist in the clinical decision-making responsibilities and will also include the anal and rectal physiology lab rotation. The major goal of the IU rotation is to allow the resident to participate in advanced rectal cancer cases requiring muscle flaps, transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEM) and advanced laparoscopic cases. The resident, with approval of attending surgeon, may participate in any procedure on the surgery schedule if needed to obtain core level surgical cases as required by the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery. The colon rectal resident will rotate on an every 6 week schedule between the
Indianapolis and Mooresville rotation as well as rotate for a six week rotation at Indiana University (see below):

Indianapolis Rotation Description: (St. Francis Indianapolis, Beech Grove, and Community South)
The Indianapolis
rotation will include colonoscopy, outpatient procedures and office at St. Francis
Indianapolis Campus. Major colon resections, including robotic assisted low
anterior resections are included in this rotation. Dr. Lane, Dr. Tsai and Dr.
Sanders will be the primary teaching staff on the Indianapolis Campus. The
resident will round daily at St. Francis Indianapolis/Beech Grove. The weekly

Mooresville Rotation Description: (St. Francis Mooresville and Clarian West)
The Mooresville
rotation will include major colon resections, colonoscopy, TEM, outpatient procedures
and office at the St. Francis Mooresville Campus and Clarian West. St. Francis
Mooresville and Clarian West are 15 minutes apart and easily accessible. Dr.
Johansen /Dr. Maun and Dr. Melbert will be the primary teaching staff on the
Mooresville Campus. The resident will round daily at St. Francis Mooresville.

Thursday: Outpatient surgery with Dr. Johansen/Dr. Maun
Friday: Office am with Dr. Johansen/Dr. Maun/Surgery pm with Dr. Melbert
Indiana University Rotation: (Indiana University Hospital)
The IU rotation will include major colon resections including advanced rectal cancers requiring rotational and free muscle flaps, colonoscopy, outpatient procedures, and office
at the Surgery outpatient (SOPA) clinic at Indiana University Hospital. Dr.
Bruce Robb and Dr. Virgilio George will be the primary teaching staff on the IU
campus. The resident will round daily at Indiana University Hospital. The weekly
rotation guidelines are listed below:
Monday: Colonoscopy am/office PM with Dr. Robb
Tuesday: Outpatient and Inpatient surgery with Dr. Robb
Wednesday: Resident Education 0800-1000-colonoscopy am Dr. George/ Office pm Dr. George
Thursday: Colonoscopy am/office pm with Dr. George
Friday: Inpatient/outpatient surgery with Dr. Robb
The resident will develop the essential knowledge, attitudes, and skills in the diagnosis, operative
care, and postoperative management of patients with acute and chronic colon,
rectal, and anal surgical conditions. The major goal of each rotation is to
allow the colon and rectal surgery resident to be involved in the care of the
colon and rectal surgical patients and to assist each attending surgeon in
administrative, educational, and clinical decision-making.
Application and Interviews
Our program participates in National Residency Match Program (NRMP) and Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). All applications must be submitted via ERAS and must include:

- USMLE/ABSITE Scores
- 3 Letters of Recommendation
- Personal Statement
Applicants must be able to apply for and receive a permanent Indiana medical license and must be certified or eligible for certification by the American Board of Surgery.
One colon rectal resident will be selected each year for the training program. The deadline for submission of applications is August 14,
